End-to-end laboratory digitisation at Uganda's general medicine and surgery referral hospital, with turnaround cut by 65 percent.
The challenge
Kiruddu carries Uganda's general medicine and surgical referral load, which is the load least willing to wait. A renal or hepatic panel that comes back the next morning is a decision deferred on a ward round, and the laboratory was running its procedures, its quality control and its reporting on its own terms, so results were slow to reach clinicians and impossible to compare with any other hospital.
What MedX did
MedX put the whole laboratory on one system: reception, worksheets, quality control and sign-off in the LIMS, the analysers connected through MedX Automation so results leave the bench without being retyped, and a bidirectional link to EAFYA so the ward sees the result where the order was placed.
Background
Kiruddu National Referral Hospital is Uganda's referral centre for general medicine and surgery, including the national renal and dermatology services. It was the first of the national referral hospitals MedX digitised with the National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services, and it set the template the others followed.
What we connected
Laboratory management and instrument connectivity sit on one shared FHIR data store. The LIMS carries the workflow and the quality layer; Device Connectivity, powered by MedX Automation, pulls results directly off the analysers. Both write the same record, so a sample registered at reception becomes a clinician-ready result without anyone re-entering it.

Impact
Faster results change what a ward round can decide on the day. Kiruddu now releases most of its work inside the shift it was collected in, with the audit trail an accreditation assessor asks for and a national reporting line that does not depend on anyone remembering to send a spreadsheet.

This deployment is one of four. In partnership with the National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services, MedX digitised the laboratories of Uganda's national referral hospitals from 2024, each on the same platform and the same standards, so a result means the same thing whichever of them produced it.
