Our story

From surveillance to a shared data store.

MedX began with a focused goal: improve tuberculosis surveillance in Uganda. Working alongside the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory, we connected diagnostic instruments and moved their data where it was needed, in real time.

When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, we adapted quickly, connecting commercial laboratories for pandemic testing and automating result delivery across Uganda and neighbouring countries. From there the work broadened: the full laboratory lifecycle, brand-agnostic device connectivity, national diagnostic networks, and programme dashboards feeding ministries of health.

Today MedX is a FHIR-native platform built from four pillars on one shared data store. Devices, labs, clinicians, and workflows write to it; ministries, programmes, insurers, and analytics read from it. Nobody needs a custom integration. They connect to MedX.

Our journey

Key milestones.

2019

MedX is founded

Established in Uganda as a homegrown health-technology company, starting with tuberculosis surveillance digitisation alongside the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory.

2020

COVID-19 response

Rapidly connected commercial laboratories across Uganda and neighbouring countries for pandemic testing, with automated result delivery.

2021

Point-of-entry screening

Digitised Uganda's airport laboratory, screening over 1,500 daily arrivals with 99% of results returned in under three hours.

2022

Ethiopia diagnostic network

Connected Ethiopia's GeneXpert fleet for real-time TB surveillance and rapid result transmission, now more than 1,000 instruments across 700+ facilities in all 12 regions.

2023

Full lab lifecycle

Extended beyond surveillance to the full laboratory lifecycle, the foundation of today's MedX LIMS.

2024

Device automation

MedX Automation matured into a brand-agnostic connectivity layer supporting 50+ diagnostic instrument models.

2026

One FHIR-native platform

MedX is now a platform of four pillars, Automation, Assistant, Registry, and Workspace, on one shared FHIR data store, powering solutions from LIMS to Disease Surveillance and Clinical Intelligence.

Our mission

To interconnect health: to move health work safely between people, systems, devices, and decisions, so every facility can turn the data it already produces into better outcomes.

Our vision

A health system where every device, lab, and clinician shares one trustworthy picture of care, and where timely, accurate diagnostics reach the people who need them.

Standards & compliance

Open standards, not lock-in.

FHIR R4

FHIR-native by design, for interoperability with EHRs, exchanges, and analytics.

SMART on FHIR

Standards-based authentication and authorization across every surface.
