Laboratory digitisation at Uganda's national mental health referral hospital, a 550-bed site running above 200 percent occupancy.

Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital

The challenge

Butabika is Uganda's national referral hospital for mental health: 550 beds carrying between 1,100 and 1,300 inpatients at any time, which is above 200 percent occupancy. A laboratory serving a ward that full cannot afford a step that exists only to move numbers from one screen to another, and long-term psychiatric care depends on monitoring bloods that only mean something when you can see the series rather than the single result.

What MedX did

MedX digitised the laboratory and connected its equipment, so results are verified once and then available wherever they are needed, with the history attached rather than reassembled from a file.

Background

Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital is Uganda's only national referral hospital for mental health, and the teaching site for the country's psychiatric workforce. Its laboratory was digitised with the National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services alongside the other national referral hospitals.

Volume, on a ward at twice its capacity

Butabika has processed 8,222 verified results on its MedX-connected equipment, which places it 9th of the 50 priority government hospitals on the national platform. That is a substantial laboratory output from a site whose 550 beds are running at more than twice their intended occupancy.

What we connected

  • Laboratory workflow end to end, reception through to released result.
  • Equipment connected through MedX Automation, reporting results and its own status.
  • Bidirectional exchange with EAFYA EMR for orders and results.
  • ISO 15189 quality framework and automated HMIS and DHIS2 reporting.

Results

  • 8,222 verified results processed on connected equipment.
  • 9th of 50 priority government hospitals by connected laboratory output.
  • Full audit trail behind every released result.

Impact

Psychiatric care is long, and its laboratory monitoring is a series rather than an event. Holding those results in one record, released once and readable everywhere, is what lets a clinician see a trend in a patient they may treat for years.

Part of the national referral programme

This deployment is one of four. In partnership with the National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services, MedX digitised the laboratories of Uganda's national referral hospitals from 2024, each on the same platform and the same standards, so a result means the same thing whichever of them produced it.
