Test & Fly Commercial Laboratory
Commercial Excellence | Uganda
Commercial laboratory network with rapid turnaround times and digital result delivery.
Test & Fly runs one of Uganda's largest commercial testing networks, with 5 diagnostic centers and 103 collection sites feeding high volumes of travel and COVID-19 tests every day. During the pandemic, travellers needed certified results in hours, not days. The network had to keep turnaround times short and quality consistent across every site, while manual transcription between instruments and paper records slowed results and created room for error.
MedX connected every testing instrument across the network to one shared FHIR data store. With Device Connectivity (powered by MedX Automation), results flow straight from the analyser into the patient record, and the LIMS routes them to travellers by portal, SMS, and email without manual re-keying. Rapid screening for COVID-19 runs through Disease Surveillance and Outbreak Response, so the team can clear travel testing at speed and flag results that need attention. The whole network now operates as one paperless system.
About Test & Fly
Test & Fly is one of Uganda's premier commercial laboratory networks, operating 5 diagnostic centers and 103 collection sites across the country. Since partnering with MedX International in 2020, the company has rebuilt its operations around a single connected platform that links every center and collection point.
Modernising the network
MedX brought all 5 diagnostic centers and 103 collection sites onto one connected system, with standardised workflows and real-time visibility between every facility.
- Full digitisation of 5 diagnostic centers
- 103 collection sites linked into one shared platform
- Standardised workflows across every location
- Real-time connectivity between all facilities
Connecting the instruments
Device Connectivity (powered by MedX Automation) ties diagnostic equipment from many manufacturers into one workflow, so results land in the shared data store the moment a run finishes. This removes the bottlenecks and re-typing that used to sit between an instrument and a released result.
- 100% paperless laboratory operations
- Direct integration with diagnostic equipment
- Automated result validation and release
- Real-time quality control monitoring
Connected equipment
Molecular diagnostics: GeneXpert systems for TB and HIV, RT-PCR platforms for COVID-19, automated nucleic acid extractors, and real-time PCR analysers.
Clinical chemistry: automated chemistry analysers, immunoassay platforms, haematology analysers, and microscopy systems.
Faster results for travellers
With the LIMS handling delivery, travellers receive results through a secure online portal, by SMS, and by email, on mobile-friendly interfaces backed by round-the-clock support. Results reach travellers faster, and staff spend their time on service rather than data entry.
Results
- 80% reduction in turnaround time
- 88% of PCR tests completed in under 12 hours
- 250,000+ tests processed
- 95% elimination of manual transcription
- 100% paperless operations achieved
- 60% increase in daily capacity
- 99.9% result accuracy maintained, with zero critical result delays
MedX has completely transformed our operations. We have achieved an 80% reduction in turnaround time while maintaining the highest quality standards. Our customers now receive their results faster than ever before, and our staff can focus on providing exceptional service rather than manual data entry.
Market leadership
The transformation has positioned Test & Fly as a market leader in Uganda's commercial laboratory sector, with clear gains in customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, and business growth. Its work with MedX has set new benchmarks for commercial laboratory operations in East Africa, showing how connected instruments and automated result delivery drive both quality and speed in the diagnostic sector.
