Entebbe Airport COVID-19 Testing

The challenge

As international travel resumed in 2021, the Ministry of Health required every arrival at Entebbe International Airport to clear a mandatory RT-PCR test. The airport health lab had to screen more than 1,500 passengers a day, return results fast enough to avoid stranding travellers, and flag positive cases to public health authorities the moment they were found. Manual, paper-driven workflows could not move at that scale or speed.

What MedX did

MedX connected the airport's RT-PCR instruments to one shared FHIR data store and wrapped the testing line in automated tracking and notification. Device Connectivity, powered by MedX Automation, pulled results straight off the analysers; the LIMS handled sample tracking and automatic result delivery; and rapid positive-case alerts fed the country's Disease Surveillance and outbreak response. The lab processed 100,000 tests in its first three months with 99 percent of results out inside six hours.

Context

In 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic eased and borders reopened, Entebbe International Airport became Uganda's primary testing checkpoint. The Ministry of Health mandated RT-PCR testing for all international arrivals, creating an unprecedented need for high-volume, rapid screening at the country's main international gateway. The Entebbe International Airport Health Lab needed to run that testing line around the clock without losing a single sample or delaying a single result.

How it worked

MedX treated the airport line as one continuous, instrument-to-notification flow. Every sample was barcoded at registration and tracked through the lab, and every analyser fed its result into a single shared data store rather than a stack of disconnected machine printouts.

Arrival and sample tracking

  • Passenger registration captured on arrival, tied to a barcode for each sample
  • Barcode-based tracking from collection through to reporting
  • Live queue management so connecting-flight passengers could be prioritised

High-volume testing operations

  • 24/7 laboratory operations with shift handover built into the workflow
  • RT-PCR instruments connected directly through Device Connectivity, powered by MedX Automation
  • Real-time capacity monitoring to keep throughput ahead of arrival waves

Result delivery and case alerting

  • Automated SMS and email result notifications to travellers, handled by the LIMS
  • Immediate positive-case alerts routed to health authorities for Disease Surveillance
  • Contact tracing and quarantine-facility coordination for confirmed positives

Results

  • 1,500+ passengers tested every day
  • 99 percent of results delivered in under six hours
  • 100,000 tests completed in the first three months
  • 6,719 positive cases detected and acted on
  • Zero system downtime incidents across the program
  • 100 percent contact tracing compliance for positive cases
"MedX was absolutely critical to our pandemic response at Entebbe Airport. We were able to maintain the highest testing standards while processing unprecedented volumes of passengers. The system's reliability and speed gave us confidence to keep Uganda's borders open safely."
Dr. Monica Musenero, Senior Presidential Advisor on Epidemics

Why it mattered

Connecting point-of-entry instruments to one shared data store, with automated result notification and instant positive-case alerts, let Uganda keep its main gateway open without compromising safety. The program established the country as a regional leader in pandemic preparedness and showed how connected lab infrastructure sustains essential services during a health emergency. The tracking, connectivity, and alerting patterns built at Entebbe carry forward into MedX's Disease Surveillance and outbreak response work today.
